For the next five weeks I’ll be writing short, simple, informational posts about alcohol – be it wine, beer or liquor. Alcohol is alcohol: It all contains the psychoactive drug ethanol. Why do we drink when we had planned to take the night off? And why do we have three or four when we set out to have just one? Why do 80% of Americans drink, despite the known dangers?

Because alcohol is a highly addictive substance for humans.

All humans. It does not discriminate. Few people are content with one drink every now and then. Thing is, we don’t know we’re becoming addicted. Until we are. And then we don’t understand it. We just think it’s something we really like, and that we need to figure out how to control.

So for this week, know this: IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT. Like truly not your fault. But if you think you’d like your drinking patterns to change, as in how often and how much, it is your responsibility to take action. It won’t happen because you will it to. It’ll happen when you understand what’s going on.

I feel so good. Even in the midst of a pandemic I am able to maintain physical and mental health. It’s because I stopped wishing away and ignoring the giant wine glass in the room. And I did something. You can too.
